Classic Mahjong table: 144 tiles
The traditional “turtle”: five layers, one tile on the very top and an extra tile at each end, like a head and a tail. It is the biggest table here and the one many people remember from older computers. The tiles are drawn smaller to fit them all, so it plays best on a larger screen.
Classic at a glance
- Tiles: 144 (72 pairs to match)
- Size: Large table (120 tiles and more)
- Layers: 5, with 87, 36, 16, 4, 1 tiles from the bottom layer to the top
- Footprint: 15 tiles across and 8 deep
How it plays
87 of the 144 tiles sit on the bottom layer, and 57 are stacked above them; the top layer holds 1 tile. Tiles you can see but cannot pick are underneath others, so the stacks are where the planning is. Every game is dealt so it can be finished, and you have hints, unlimited undo and a shuffle if you get stuck.
