How to play Sudoku
Sudoku is a number puzzle with one simple rule. Fill the grid so that every row, every column and every small box has the numbers 1 to 9, once each. There is no math, and no guessing is needed.
The goal
Fill every empty square so no number repeats in any row, column or 3 × 3 box.
How it works
- Some squares already have numbers. They are the clues, and they stay the same.
- Tap an empty square, then tap a number on the pad to put it there. Your numbers are blue; the clues are dark.
- Each number from 1 to 9 can only appear once in every row, once in every column, and once in every 3 × 3 box.
- Fill in all the squares and you have solved it.
Friendly tips
- Begin with a number that already appears a lot in the grid. Look for the one place left where it can go.
- Or begin with a row, column or box that is nearly full, and find the numbers it is missing.
- Turn on Notes to jot small pencil numbers while you think. They are easy to rub out.
- Tap Hint and one square is filled in, with a short explanation of why it has to be that number.
- Four levels: Gentle has the most numbers to start, then Easy, Medium and Hard. Undo takes back a move, as often as you like.
